AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews name your business when customers ask them for what you sell.

Key points

What does AI visibility mean for a local business?

AI visibility is the share of relevant customer questions where an answer engine names your business, describes it correctly and points to sources that support it. Unlike a search ranking, there's no fixed position, and the answer changes from run to run.

For a law firm, a dental practice or a roofing company, the questions that matter are local and specific: "Who's a good probate lawyer in Columbus?" or "Which roofer near me handles insurance claims?"

Hypothetical example: someone asks Gemini for a dentist open on Saturdays. The answer names your practice with your old hours, so they rule you out and book elsewhere without ever visiting your site.

Why does AI visibility matter now?

Two findings from early 2026 explain it.

First, customers are using these tools to find local businesses. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, published February 11, 2026 from a survey of 1,002 U.S. adults, found that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in a year.

Second, the engines name very few businesses. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, released January 28, 2026, found that ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of brand locations, compared with a 35.9% appearance rate for the same brands in Google's local 3-Pack. That study covered multi-location brands, not independent firms, so treat it as a sign of how narrow the shortlist is, not as your odds.

What should you measure for AI visibility?

A yes or no on "are you mentioned" hides most of the picture. These five measures tell you more:

MeasureThe question it answersWhere you get it
Mention rateOut of all your test runs, how often were you named?Your own question list, run in each engine
AccuracyWere your hours, services, area and contact details right? The sentences the engine wrote about you
Competitors namedWho gets named when you don't?The same answers
Sources citedWhich sites did the engine cite or link? The citations under each answer
AI referral visitsDid anyone click through to your site?GA4

The first four come from asking the engines yourself. To set up, write down the questions customers actually ask before hiring you, and make a spreadsheet with one row per run.

How do you track AI visibility each month?

  1. Rerun the same questions. A workable starting point is 5 questions, each run 2 times in fresh chats, for 10 runs per engine. Use last month's exact wording. Record the date, your location, the model and any search settings, and keep them the same each month.
  2. Log mention rate per engine. Report ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode separately. Mention rate is runs that named you divided by completed runs for that engine. Log failed runs, and searches where no AI Overview appeared, in their own columns.
  3. Copy any wrong fact word for word. Then find where it lives: an old page, a stale directory listing or an outdated Google Business Profile.
  4. Note new sources and new competitors. A directory or review site that keeps showing up is one to check your listing on.
  5. Check referral visits in GA4. Use the steps below.
  6. Pick one fix for the month. Write it next to the scores. A mention-rate change next month doesn't prove the fix caused it, since answers shift on their own. Record whether the wrong fact is gone as one observation and the mention-rate trend as another.

Hypothetical example: in October you're named in 2 of 10 ChatGPT runs for "family dentist in [your town]" and Perplexity lists your old Saturday hours. You fix the hours on your site and Business Profile. In November you check whether the wrong hours are gone, then log the mention rate separately.

How can you see AI visibility in Google Analytics?

Partly. Google's channel definitions now include a channel for visits from sources like ChatGPT and Gemini. Seer Interactive's guide to tracking AI traffic, updated June 22, 2026, says sessions GA4 recognizes get their own medium starting with "ai-", while traffic from before that rollout stays under Referral or Direct.

In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the table to "Session source / medium". For recent months, look for that "ai-" medium. For older months, search for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai with the medium "referral".

Seer also warns that some of this traffic lands in "direct", for example when someone copies a link or opens it inside an app. Treat the GA4 figure as a floor, not a total.

Does Search Console show Google AI Overviews traffic?

Not on its own. Google's page on AI features and your website says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in your overall Search Console traffic, in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. You can't split them out.

Your answer log fills that gap. It keeps the exact words Google's AI used about you each month, so you can see when a wrong fact appears or disappears.

What moves AI visibility for a local business?

The fixes are the same ones this site covers in detail: let the engines' crawlers read your site, say plainly what you do and where, keep your facts consistent across listings, and keep honest reviews coming. Our guide on how to get recommended by AI when local customers ask around goes through each.

The monthly routine tells you which of those to work on first. If you're named but described wrongly, fix the facts. If a competitor is named and the cited sources are directories you're missing from, fix the listings. If you're never named at all, even when someone asks about you by name, check crawler access before anything else.

When does it make sense to get help?

A handful of questions run by hand will show the big problems. It won't give a steady mention rate across many questions, every engine and your main competitors. If you want that wider measurement and a ranked list of fixes, an AI visibility audit from Vector Index measures how you appear across the engines and tells you what to change. You or your web person make the changes.

FAQ

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No. SEO tracks where your pages rank in a list of links. AI visibility tracks whether an engine names you in its written answer, what it says and which sources it cites or links. Good SEO helps, especially for Google AI Overviews, but it doesn't guarantee you're named.

Why is my AI visibility different in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Each engine uses its own search systems and sources, and answers vary from run to run. That's why you track each engine separately and count how often you're named across several runs.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

Monthly suits most owners, plus a check after a website rebuild, a move or a change in services. Keep the question list the same so the months compare.

This week, record your AI visibility baseline using the protocol above, then put next month's check on your calendar.
